Recent Paintings and Works on Paper

September 24 – October 31, 2009

Press Release

The gallery is pleased to present its third exhibition of works by Susan Jane Walp. The exhibition will include paintings, and for the first time, works on paper, that have been created over the last two years.

The artist’s works are intimate and intensely observed and never larger than a foot square. She paints still life at close range, and takes in carefully arranged objects including bowls, fruit, bricks, corks, forks and spoons. The compositions are meticulously considered and the finished painting is arrived at slowly over time.

Although the paintings are fully resolved – every element in its place, they remain open and very much alive. By carefully observing the light and precisely depicting each object, the artist creates a private world and allows the viewer inside.

Susan Jane Walp attended Mount Holyoke College and the Brooklyn College MFA program. She continued her studies at the New York Studio School and at Skowhegan. Walp has received a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship and a fellowship from the New York Creative Arts Public Service Program. She was recently awarded the Academy Award in Art from The American Academy of Arts and Letters, New York.
